GOALS OF THE CHAIR

In January 2008, Dr. Stewart B. Harris was appointed the inaugural Canadian Diabetes Association Chair (CDA) in Diabetes Management at The University of Western Ontario.

As Canadian Diabetes Association Chair in Diabetes Management, Dr. Harris will play a central and critical leadership role in the development and implementation of the National Diabetes Management Strategy. The broad goals of the National Diabetes Management Strategy are to:

  • Identify strategies to reduce these clinical care gaps
  • Develop and evaluate evidence-based models of diabetes care
  • Increase adherence to diabetes clinical practice guidelines

An internationally recognized physician and researcher, Dr. Harris received his medical education and family medicine training from the University of Calgary, Alberta. He obtained further training at Johns Hopkins University, School of Hygiene and Public Health, completing a Masters Degree in Public Health and a Fellowship in Preventive Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland.

With over 170 articles in major peer-reviewed journals, Dr. Harris’s major research interest focuses on type 2 diabetes in high-risk populations (including Aboriginal Canadians, new immigrants, and patients with mental health conditions), and the application of clinical practice guidelines in the management of diabetes in primary care.
