Results of the START Study
(Self-Titration With Apidra to Reach Target)

As family physicians care for the vast majority of patients with type 2 diabetes, they must learn how to intensify insulin. Family physicians frequently cite their own fear of inducing hypoglycemia and time constraints as barriers to intensifying insulin. There is increasing acceptance of strategies that progressively add bolus to basal insulin. However… the best way to do this is unclear. The START study examined whether a patient-driven self-titration algorithm could achieve glycemic control that was comparable to that achieved by physician-titrated bolus insulin.
